Garden Progress 05/04/2012

Well, there's been some progress with the garden!
Picture
I put a fence around 2 of the raised beds due to bunnies eating my plants.
Picture
The potatoes FINALLY came up. I've never grown potatoes so this is merely a "winging it" adventure with them. We'll see how it goes.

Garden 2012 04/12/2012

My life has been consumed by grad school class, grad school papers, and work with little free time (or money) in between. However, I still have time and energy to garden. After gardening for years with only some success, I've decided that raised beds were the way to go for many reasons. Namely, you control the soil quality.

Picture
I went out and bought cedar wood. Not only is it not chemical treated, but it lasts longer than other untreated woods, and it's pretty!
Picture
I looked at some free compost from the borough. It wasn't 100% composted, but I took it anway.
Picture
I laid cardboard down on the bottoms of the bed to prevent weeds from coming up. What happens is the cardboard gives no light to the weed seeds beneath and it also serves as a barrier.
Picture
Finished beds with compost, sand, and peat moss. The bed on the right will have lots of root vegetables -carrots, radishes, onions, potatoes, etc.

I made one more bed, and I might make one more!

Juicer 01/10/2012

I got a juicer for Christmas and I love it! The first juice I made was a carrot apple juice, and today I made a tangerine/orange juice. With most citrus fruits you must peel off the skin skin before juicing because it makes the juice bitter, and it's supposedly not great for you. The juice still came out a little bitter today, but I wonder if that's because the fruit itself was a little bitter or because I'm used to the juices in the supermarket that are full of sweetners/preservatives. Nonetheless, it was yummy. I got about 2 cups worth of juice from 1 large orange and four tangerines. Not bad!

Tuesday evening, we headed down to Cape May to use a groupon for a Wetlands Wildlife Safari aboard the "Osprey" for a 6pm Sunset cruise. It was quite wonderful! Before we boarded the boat, we looked through their little aquarium, which had a horseshoe crab, starfish, eel, and flounder. They pulled them out to show us and gave us interesting facts about them all.

After heading out into the bay, we saw A LOT of birds. They provided binoculars free of charge to be used during the ride. We saw a rare brown booby bird, tons of osprey, herons, egrets, and so on. It was warm out, but slightly cool enough for a hoodie. In other words, perfect weather. The sunset was fabulous, as well. We topped the night off with dinner at "Harpoon Henry's," which was a fun outdoorsy place right off the beach. We walked in as the whole entire bar/restaurant was singing "Sweet Caroline."

"Brunch without Borders" offers an unlimited delicious small plate menu for brunch on the weekends for $25. Everything was absolutely delicious! I, also, forgot to photograph a few of the dishes!

One of my favorites. Missing: Hot Churro that we devoured. This is a basket of pastries that consisted of a churro, amazing banana bread, guava pastry, and an orange ginger muffin. It came with mango butter and guava jam.

NOM NOM. Corn pancakes with rum maple syrup, mango butter, and bacon. Holy moses it was delicious.

The beau ordered this octopus salad. I did not try it, but he loved it.
